The BBC are reporting that a kite surfer has been killed by a large group of Sharks in southern Florida.

This is the first fatality from a shark bite in 5 years, though there are numerous reports of shark bites each year.

The deceased man has been named as 38 year old Stephen Schafer. Lifeguards found him surrounded by sharks some 500 metres from the shore. He was still alive at the time and had been screeming to his rescuers that he had been bitten.

The lifeguard managed to get him to shore, however he later died from his injuries whilst in hospital. The Martin County Sheriff's Office was investigating the death, Captain Mark McKinley said.

According to Sky News, Sharks have been gathering along Palm Beach County beaches recently, in their annual chase of baitfish.

Lemon, bull and hammerhead sharks are often seen off beaches in the area at this time of year.
